5,497 Written One- and Two-Star Google Reviews of High-Review-Count Gyms and Fitness Clubs in Eight US Metros

When members leave one- and two-star Google reviews for gyms, they are rarely complaining about broken treadmills or worn-out dumbbells. A recent analysis of 5,497 written negative reviews from high-volume fitness clubs across eight major US metros shows that operational failure drives customer dissatisfaction far more than physical assets.

The study examined low-rated reviews across Phoenix, Dallas, Atlanta, Charlotte, Columbus, Denver, Tampa, and Kansas City. A language model classified the primary driver in 5,491 of those reviews. An overwhelming 80.1 percent focused directly on how the business is run, including billing disputes, cancellation friction, and front-desk service. By contrast, only 19.0 percent cited the equipment or the physical facility itself, with the remaining 0.9 percent deemed unclear.

For operators, this data demonstrates that capital expenditure cannot compensate for broken processes. Upgrading a weight room or adding new machines will not insulate a facility from reputation damage if billing policies are aggressive or customer support is unresponsive. The primary levers that protect retention and local market perception are administrative and managerial.
