Standard Operating Procedures | SMB Advisor
Gallup recently reported that only 46 percent of United States employees strongly agree they know what is expected of them at work. That figure is down from 56 percent in March 2020. Out of all twelve engagement elements Gallup measures, clarity of expectations showed the steepest decline over the past four years.
When performance expectations are ambiguous, execution breaks down. A standard operating procedure exists primarily to define expected performance clearly, eliminating guesswork from day-to-day operations. Without written standards, managers spend disproportionate time correcting avoidable mistakes and mediating conflicting interpretations of how work should be done.
Documenting procedures is not about generating red tape. It provides the foundation for accountability, delegation, and consistent quality across a growing organization. When employees understand the exact standard required, friction decreases and operational output becomes reliable.
